Healthy snacking takes to the air ( Wednesday 28 May 2008 )

Delicious, healthy pineapple has just taken off - quite literally. Individually sleeved Cape fresh pineapple sticks, originally developed in partnership by Capespan and Superior Food, have now launched as part of the British Airways long haul menu.
Since launching at the end of March, the feedback has been very positive. Demand is currently 80 000 sticks per week, but this is expected to increase to over 100,000 sticks per week during the peak summer months.
Capespan's commercial director Alistair Phillipson is delighted with the success of the BA line. "This is a great example of genuine innovation between companies with differing areas of expertise. With a five-day shelf life, the Cape fresh pineapple stick provides a deliciously sweet and juicy snack that can be enjoyed conveniently from an airline seat."
Said David Guy, Superior Food commercial director, "The Cape pineapple sticks are a natural choice offering passengers a healthy and refreshing menu addition. British Airways were quick to recognise the potential of the clean eat sticks whilst identifying the health benefits and broad consumer appeal of pineapples. This represents an exciting and innovative addition to our portfolio."
Superior Food manufactures and distributes Cape prepared fruit products under license from Capespan in the UK. It has considerable expertise in fresh cut pineapple manufacture and through partner Gate Gourmet, many years experience within flight catering.
The MD2 pineapples used for the Cape pineapple sticks are sourced in Costa Rica, where fewer pineapples are grown per acre to guarantee sweetness. This variety offers consistent quality with a firm texture, golden appearance, high brix and high acid pH. Pineapple is a good source of manganese and contains significant amounts of vitamin C and B1 to stave off colds, help build bones and aids healthy digestion.
Capespan and Superior Food will be looking at increasing the range in the future with additional fruit products.
