CAPESPAN AND SAFETY
To be a sustainable company, Capespan Fruit’s management and staff are committed to render excellent service in the procurement and marketing of the highest quality fresh fruit and providing supply chain solutions.
The company supports all aspects of food safety, regulatory requirements and environmentally sound practices in the production of fruit. This is achieved by promoting ethical fruit production; ensuring worker health and safety, fair treatment of farm and pack-house workers; and maintaining traceability of products from orchard to store.
Capespan Fruit applies the stipulated regulations of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Logistical Practice (GLP) for the production, handling and packaging of fresh produce, applicable to the relevant countries of export.
Total Produce, Capespan’s major international shareholder, is a member of the European Retailers Environmental Protocol (EUREP), established by major retailers and their suppliers across Europe to address consumer concerns regarding food safety, environmental protection, worker welfare and to promote safe and sustainable agriculture.
Under EUREP, worker conditions must comply with local regulations, as well as either with the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) Base Code, or the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) code. Capespan Fruit is also a registered member of the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (SEDEX), which monitors compliance to minimum labour and human rights standards on fruit farms.
On our farms we encourage implementation of Integrated Crop Management (ICM) as part of the crop protection strategy.
From a product supplier perspective, we have regular reviews to maintain the ISA 9001:2008 requirements ensuring continuous improvement and to remain the preferred global provider of fresh produce and supply chain solutions. Depending on customer requirements, our suppliers might be requested to attain one or more of the following production and management standards: BRC, SQF, IFS, HACCP, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 22000, BSCI and ETI.
We conform to all food hygiene and safety regulations listed and adhere to relevant legislation pertaining to the migration of chemicals from ink and their associated coatings on paper and cardboard to foodstuffs. To enable Capespan Fruit to comply with legislation and for internal auditing practices, the company requires that certificates of conformance of all packaging supplied by suppliers meet the legislation and its amendments.
