About Us
OVERVIEW
Blazing a trail... assertive delivery
As a South African citrus company, the success of South African fruit in Japan is Goldspan's raison d'être. We tackle the Japanese market assertively to up the South African share and increase penetration at retail shelf level. After all, Capespan delivers.
Being diversified in product and customer base, we're competitive on cost and sell more than 95 percent of fruit independently and only five percent to the three traditional Japanese importers. Most importantly, as a well established and trusted brand, we're unwavering in further developing this strength.
With our long-term strategy of developing and growing the quality and quantity of South African citrus consumed in Japan, Goldspan is the preferred supplier. And by balancing the business structure in addition to transferring timely and accurate information, we ensure long-term profitability for all participants.
Needless to say, with food safety and traceability a priority, we maintain steady and even delivery throughout the supply window.
STRATEGY
Keen planning... focused relationships
Trade relationships with our business partners are paramount. Re-focusing on the wholesale and retail market, our experienced sales team has developed new business partnerships rapidly. Hence the ability of Goldspan to sell down the line.
Further enhancing our programme, 2005 saw the opening of a sales office in Osaka to cover that city and the southern Japanese regions. Only through a presence here are we able to implement the strategy of direct to retail sales as we've done in Tokyo and the northern areas. We now have a solid core of more than 60 buyers in the Osaka region to warrant our permanent presence.
Having the only South African-owned marketing office in the market, we're concentrating on selling South African citrus as close to the consumer as possible, in conjunction with our market partners.
As a complementary service, Goldspan also offers among others, Canadian, Chinese and American frozen blueberries and strawberries, Chinese lychees and strawberries, Chilean grapes, kiwifruit and clementines, Mexican mangos, as well as New Zealand Satsuma mandarins. And to fill the gap between the South African seasons, we handle Florida grapefruit.
THE MARKET
Effective programming... meeting requirements
With the bulk of our fruit being sold to wholesale or retail, Goldspan effectively programmes our partners' seasonal requirements.
In the case of our large retail partners, the fruit is delivered to their respective distribution centres. Alternatively, the product is channelled through a wholesaler or pre-packer of choice.
However, deals are negotiated directly with our buyer/retailer partners. We don't sell to wholesalers without knowing where the fruit will be consumed.
